Bead Jewelry from Newspaper and Candy Wrappers

My regular readers know that I’m a fan of using “alternative” materials when creating bead type jewelry. I’ve seen typewriter keys used for jewelry, all sorts of jewelry made from recyclyable material and even bracelets made out of coffee beans. A few nights ago I was “Unwrapped” on FoodTV that featured an artist who made bead jewelry from newspaper and candy wrappers! I started poking around online and found that there are more than a few “newspaper jewelry” artists out there!
Holly Anne Mitchell is the artist and she has a whole website filled with amazing pieces of paper jewelry! They are remarkable items made almost entirely of cut and rolled pieces of paper that have been coated to keep them sturdy and protect them from water. They truly are jewelry pieces made from paper beads. She often ties the pieces together with shiny gold or silver colored beads and wires which works great as a contrast against the colors of the paper. She uses all sorts of paper items including coupons, comic strips and even crossword puzzles!
You can even read a short profile of how Holly Anne Mitchell and how she got started over at The Crafts Report. Her first paper jewelry products started out as a project for a class and she just kept working on the idea until it really clicked. Today she’s a professional artisan who makes a living by creating and selling her unique paper jewelry! They really do make quite a statement!

How cool! I love recycled jewelry too. I use Scrabble tiles, puzzle pieces, and lately a repurposed belt…but wrappers…now why didn’t I think of that!

[...] Okay, I admit that I have a soft spot for bead jewelry made out of very unconventional “beads” that most people wouldn’t consider jewelry. I don’t usually wear jewelry that isn’t conventional, but I simply fall in love with the idea of recycling and using household items to create works of art and beauty! In the past I’ve highlighted coffee bean bead jewelry, bead jewelry made from old typewriter keys and even some artistic beaded items made from candy wrappers. [...]

I made beeds from watermelon seeds! They look really good with just their natural color. They look kind of tropical or even bohemian. i just finish them by laying them spread out flat on a newspaper and spray with a glossy finishing spray after I’ve made holes in them with a needle.

Saw the Unwrapped show last night and just had to find this jewelry on the internet. Amazing. I only wish I could come up with ideas like this one. I can “copy” but my imagination is not in gear. I will try it now, though.
