Bead Jewelry Idea: Amber Teething Necklaces

Amber Teething Necklaces are difficult to make, so you might be better off buying one such as this beautiful piece from Amberizon.
I was clued into this great bead jewelry idea by a friend who has an infant son who is going through a tough patch with his new teeth coming in. My friend had tried everything to soothe the pain and calm the poor thing but finally found something amazing that she swears works: Amber Teething Necklaces!
These teething necklaces aren’t made for chewing, but rather, they’re usually made to be worn by the mother while the child is carried against the mother. There are some versions of the amber teething necklace that are meant to be worn by the child, but I would think you’d have to be very careful about that. If the necklaces were to be worn by babies the child should only wear it when being supervises (never while sleeping) and the clasp would have to be a “break away” clasp to prevent any sort of accidental pulling or choking!
Apparently this has been a tradition in European countries for centuries and is just starting to gain widespread acknowledgment here in the United States. Hippocrates and the early Greeks prescribed wearing amber around the neck to help sooth sore throats and headaches. The same principals apply to Amber Teething Necklaces: the amber supposedly acts as a pain reliever for a child when he or she is leaning against a mother’s chest. The heat from a mother’s body reacts with the oils in the amber resin and provides and calming affect for both mother and baby.
Amber teething necklaces are a lot of work to make, but they are simply beautiful when you see them in person. Each piece of amber (either irregular shaped pieces or rounded beads) is knotted on the string so that even if a young child were to bite through or break a strand the beads wouldn’t come off the string and be accidentally swallowed or serve as a choking hazard.
Honestly, they look like a lot of work! And finding high quality suitable amber pieces may be a little bit of a chore. Have any of you ever attempted to make one of these on your own?

Hi. I hand-craft amber teething necklaces, and would have to agree that they are very time intensive to make, and consistently knotting the thread and placing the knot where it has to go does take quite a bit of trial and error to master. I have a great supplier now for geuine natural untreated baltic amber, but it certainly is hard to source. I finish my amber teething necklaces off with .925 sterling silver clasps which you can view at http://www.chookmook.co.nz. Thanks.
