I’ve taken some time off creating my own jewelry just to give myself some “mental space” before starting up for the spring and summer craft season again. While I haven’t created anything of my own in about a month, I have visited two small craft fairs and noticed that almost all the bead jewelry artisans there were selling something I have yet to make: Beaded Cell Phone Charms!

Beaded cell phone charms are really quite easy to make and lots of fun! They are usually nothing more than a single strand of beads that attaches to your cell phone or to your cell phone case. Think of them as a bracelet with two clasps that doesn’t necessarily have to work together! They help you find your cell phone in a crowded purse in a hurry and give your phone a unique flare that no one else has!

To make a cell phone charm all you really need to do it put together a short strand of beads as though you were designing a bracelet or necklace. Instead of using a clasp you can generally use a cell phone finding. Attach your string of beads to the metal ring and then loop the corded lanyard through a strap hole in the cell phone or a loop on your cell phone case. I’ve also seen cell phone charms that use little metal plates which you then attach to your cell phone by unscrewing the antenna and threading that through one of the plate holes. The metal finding method seems to be more common now.

When creating beaded charms for cell phones I suggest foregoing expensive or fancy beads and sticking with stronger materials (though I think using small Swarovski crystals would be divine!) Think about how much abuse a cell phone usually gets, going in and out of your purse, being tossed on the kitchen table, falling off desks. You definitely should think about “durability” in a way you don’t normally think about with regular bead jewelry. I would also probably try to avoid any “sharp” or protruding beads or anything that could easily get snagged or caught on things easily.

There are lots of great tutorials on the web showing you the basics of creating these great charms and like all bead jewelry you’re really only limited by your imagination. Here’s one short and sweet beaded cell phone charm tutorial and here’s another charm tutorial that goes into a little more depth but unfortunately has some blurry photos.

Good luck and keep on beading!

Great design idea! Easy to make, and since everyone, their dog, and their cat has a cell phone now, there are lots of phones to embellish!
