Robyn, it can be hard going starting out but if you've got a good product it should always sell. It is staggering to look at some of the statistics on Etsy shops, though. I've compared several people selling both gemstones & supplies and also jewellery - they may have had several thousand bead sales but less than a hundred jewellery sales - and within the same time period. There is so much competition on ebay & etsy - the trick is to try and connect with your audience. I would also suggest trying to sell 'make your own earring' kits etc, with supplies and instructions - so many people are getting into the craft.

I started my business making jewellery from a hobby and turned it into a really profitable online shop. HOWEVER, be prepared for a lot of hard work, especially if the jewellery you sell is all hand made! It's lots of work

This is true. I am a hobbypreneur that just loves beaded jewelry. I started out doing stuff for myself, for my friends ad believe it or not, my pets. I had a hard time selling at ebay auctions though. The turnout is always lower than the expectations that I decided its not worth the effort. Maybe I'm missing something and try it again in the future as that was quite a long time ago.

Hobbypreneur is a great term but I think it can be extended further to the term "beaderpreneur" to describe beaders who have taken the plunge and turned their hobby into a business. I talk about this in more detail (http://www.beadjewelryprofits.com/blog/home-jewelry-business/are-you-a-beaderpreneur)

I agree with you that the economic downturn has seen a rise in the numbers of beaderpreneurs. There is something quite magical about using beading as a way to relax even when everything around you is in turmoil.

It's only natural for your thoughts to turn to whether you can make money from doing something that you derive so much pleasure from - whether it's beading or any other hobby you may have.

Thanks for a great post :-)
