Cheap Beading Supplies Can Be Found At Closing Rag Shop Stores

Hurry! You can still get some great jewelry supplies on sale at your local closing Rag Shop store!
I normally like to write about beading supply vendors that sell their inventory online as well as in a real store, but this is a special case. Rag Shop is closing and selling off everything they have! For those of you who aren’t familiar with it, Rag Shop is a arts and crafts supply store that carried a little bit of everything, including seasonal decor items, fabric and even bead jewelry supplies. Their stores were often smaller in space than a JoAnne’s Frabrics or a Michael’s, but they had a lot of neat and unique items and always had great sales.
They are closing all 61 stores, that extend up and down the East Coast of the US, mostly between Connecticut and Florida. Rag Shop’s bankruptcy is due to increase competition from places like Wal-Mart and the larger craft stores that simply have so much inventory and market power and that a small store can’t easily compete. You can still visit Rag Shop’s website and click on the big sale graphic to use the online store locator to find a store in your area.
There is a thin Swarovski crystal lining on this dark cloud, though. All Rag Shop stores are selling off all their craft and arts supplies at a pretty deep discount, so you can definitely get some good beading materials for a steal! I have two Rag Shops near me and I hit the smaller one last night and walked out with two big shopping bags of items for about $30! They didn’t have a lot of unique or interesting beads left at this store, but they had plenty of seed beads, wires, tools and other supplies I was putting off getting. I also picked out some great new material to lay over my table when I work my booth at craft shows.
They’re also selling off all the in store display cases and shelves, so if you’re looking for some unique or larger display items for your beaded creations, this might be the time to visit! Oh, and check to make sure you’ve used up your Rag Shop gift certificates if you happen to have any! The company says they have about $900,000 outstanding unused gift certificates floating around out there!
I’m sorry to see Rag Shop go, but I’m trying to make the best of the situtation by buying all the cheap beading supplies I can while they’re still open. There’s no final “closing” date set, but it looks like most will be open for at least another couple weeks. Good luck finding some great jewelry supply deals!

I, too, am sorry to see Rag Shop stores close. I became familiar with them about 20 years ago when I began to cross stitch. They had everything for the avid cross stitcher, plus so many great seasonal and decorating items.
I understand that they were bought out by another company unfamiliar with the crafts industry.
Sounds like the company that bought out my former employer. I quit my job recently as I was getting physically and mentally ill from the stress and pressure. I’m learning that many more are also jumping ship there.
Why can’t the big companies stay out of industries they don’t know anything about?
Again, I am so sorry to see Rag Shop go. Certainly Walmart’s Craft Department cannot hold a candle to a store that specializes in crafts . . .
