I was looking for a unique gift for a friend and I stumbled upon the Mercardo Global website which is filled with all sorts of amazing hand made crafts and jewelry! Mercardo Global is a non-profit organization that emphasizes free trade for the world’s economically poor and rural populations. They do this by selling the products, crafts and even bead jewelry made by people in disadvantaged countries at a fair price and return the profit to the people for their own benefit as well as the educational benefit of their children!
Mercardo Global has an amazing collection of hand made items, but what really caught my eye were all the affordable and gorgeously intricate beaded jewelry! They have about 20 different bracelets and necklaces available right now, some with bead work patterns, some with pearls and some appear to be made with wire and bead or string and bead. They all look very professional and they’re all priced low for bead jewelry of such quality.
Mercardo Global explains their cause in a little more detail:
Together with our partner NGOs, we work with women’s cooperatives across the world and help them to create beautiful handmade products. Through our online store Wear Your Difference and our Fair Trade Sourcing Program, we then find the markets for their products. All our sales provide women with fair wages and investments in their children’s education.
100% of profits return to our partner cooperatives to promote both fair wage employment and investments in their children’s education.
But their jewelry items are not the only things made with beads! They also have a few hand bags that also have some bead patterns on them. In fact, if you visit them for the bead jewelry, be sure to also look at their other products as well. They have a lot of very pretty and affordable items. I have to admit that I love beaded jewelry items that are made from multiple strands of beads, but I almost never can find the time to really sit down and make them very well.
