How To Name Your Handcrafted Bead Jewelry

Jewelry Business, Jewelry and Beading Fun - April 14, 2009 - By: Laura Kay

Do you name the bead jewelry pieces you make, whether they’re for yourself or for sale?

How to name handcrafted bead jewelryGiven specific names to the beaded jewelry that you make can not only be fun, but it can also increase your sales if done correctly. Naming your jewelry is a pretty personal process (just as making your own jewelry is) but here are some clever ways you can give your handcrafted jewelry pieces their own names:

Name Your Beaded Jewelry Based on Color: If your jewelry is mostly one color or color family, consider naming it based on the colors use. Instead of selling a “red necklace” try selling a “Fierce and Fiery Necklace of Flame” or a “Deep Crimson Ring of Rubies for the Neck!” The name is funky clever, and uses alliteration, which makes it a little easier to remember and fun to say!

Name Your Bead Jewelry After Parts of the World: Does your beaded bracelet have a Far East feel to it? Maybe it invokes images of an simpler time or far away island? Or was your jewelry inspired by a movie you saw or a trip you took to a foreign country? Naming your jewelry after parts of the world is a fun way to think about what inspired you and to invoke exciting images in the heads of your potential buyers. I’ve seen jewelry pieces named exclusively after cities all over the world and though I haven’t been to any of those cities, it’s still a fun a memorable way to market jewelry.

Name Your Jewelry After Your Inspiration: Did you make those earrings after visiting a fruit stand? Maybe that necklace was made during a thunderstorm. Either way, you can have fun selling your “Apple and Orange Earrings” or your “Thunder and Lightning Link Bracelet.”

Name Your Jewelry With A Story: That’s what Cynthia Newcomer Daniel over at CND Jewelry Tales does. Every piece she puts up on her blog comes with a wonderful short piece of poetic prose that reads like it’s part of a larger story. It’s easy to be just as fascinated with her jewelry as with the words behind them.

Don’t worry if you initially have a difficult time coming up with some appropriate names. Sometimes you need to put a piece down for a few days before coming back to it and really being able to see it as a beautiful piece of hand crafted jewelry and not just another “project” you’ve been intimately involved with. Some other tips for naming your jewelry

Use Humor When Appropriate: Jewelry naming is meant to be fun and not always descriptive. Try naming your jewelry after pieces of food, different animals or even circus acts. How about a “Burger and Fries Bracelet,”, “Naughty Newt Necklace” or “High Flying Tie Tacks”? I don’t know what any of them look like, but they sound like fun!

Use Words with the Same Sounds: I do this naturally when I’m thinking of names for jewelry. Using words with a lot of the same sounds gives them the impression that they belong together. I mean, c’mon, I just made up “Naughty Newt Necklace” and it sounded totally legit! LOL! You can even use different words for “earring”, “necklace”, “bracelet” and other pieces. How about “Amazing Azul Aural Adornments” instead of “Pretty Blue Earrings”?

Name Your Jewelry With A Theme: Did you give your jewelry business a unique and clever name? You can always try to tie your jewelry names in with your business name. If your jewelry business name is something like “Judy’s Fruity Jewelry” then perhaps you could name all your jewelry after various pieces of fruit such as “Elderberry Earrings” and “Banana Bracelets.” Okay, those probably aren’t the best examples, but you get the idea!

Cheat: Don’t feel pressured to name every piece. Feel free to solicit the help from others in your family. Ask your friends what they think of the jewelry piece you’re trying to name. You can even have a “Name This Jewelry” contest at a craft show or on your website! You may also want to pick up a copy of the highly acclaimed “Words That Sell” which is a sort of thesaurus that can help you come up with great words that will actually influence people to buy your jewelry! It’s really meant for writers who write professional sales copy, but it can be used to come up with jewelry names and write short descriptions, especially on your jewelry selling website!

Good luck naming all those Beautifully Bouncy Beaded Jingling Jewelry pieces!

What a great idea you have recommended. There are people who simply don’t like the common names, but, if you give certain themes or story names as mentioned by you, it sounds more attractive. Strawberry necklace is also an attractive name. Thanks
