Ugliest Necklace Contest – Sponsored by Land of Odds and Be Dazzled Bead Stores

Land of Odds and Be Dazzled bead stores sponsoring the Fifth Annual Ugliest Necklace Contest.
I’m not sure exactly how I came across the online bead store called Land of Odds – The South’s Most Unusual Store, but I’m sure glad I did! When you first visit the site you’ll notice that it’s not like a typical bead online bead jewelry store: the site design is a bit unique and the navigation is a little unconventional, but you can’t deny that they have a ton of great beads, beading supplies and even some online tutorials! They have all sorts of unique beads including ceramic and porcelain beads, letter and message beads, wooden beads, gemstone and glass beads, beading books, findings, beading supplies and much more!
Run by James Jones, Warren Feld and their three dogs, this looks like a group of beading people who know how to have fun! Land of Odds hosts a fun contest called the Ugly Necklace Contest ever year and it looks like a hoot! They’re down to the 10 semi-finalists now, and you can even vote for which ugly necklace you think should win. The winners receive store credit that is worth close to $1000! You can even visit an online discussion forum dedicated to talking about the ugliest necklace! You would think that making something ugly is easy, but there’s a lot more to it than just slapping together random pieces and beads. There are lots of rules and criteria on how to make your necklace super ugly!
You have to take your time and really look around to see all there is to find at Land of Odds. I kept going back to the site throughout the week and kept finding new things that I’d missed before. Besides the Ugliest Necklace Contest they also have a Beaded Doll contest. Though I’m much more into the jewelry, I’m amazed at the intricacy and skill that’s obviously needed to create such amazing beaded dolls.
Land of Odds also have an award-winning sister bead store called Be Dazzled that has its own online bead store! The two stores are similar, but still very separate stores with a distinct vibe about them. Besides the two different bead stores, there’s also The Center for Beadwork & Jewelry Arts where you can take a bead jewelry class and The Open Window Gallery that features the work of bead and jewelry artists from around the world! See, I told you there was a lot to discover! Both stores have physical locations in Tennessee, and if I ever get back down there again I’m definitely putting them on my list of places to visit!

My necklace is one of the semi-finalists, and I had no idea just how much I was going to learn about design until I entered this contest. What started out as a lark quickly developed into examining everything I thought I knew about the elements and principles of design. Our brains just don’t *want* to do ugly, and they try to thwart our efforts! It was an absolute hoot to participate in this contest. My necklace is called “Queasy”, and it’s down near the bottom of the page. Warning…the queasiness factor is pretty high LOL!!
